Lazy Sunday bits and pieces

Today I thought I would leave the heavy overall stuff and do some fun stuff on my kitchen table. First I needed to weld on some brackets which had come away from the grill surround. It look like these brackets had been welded to the surround originally but the weld broke away. The weld did not look very good I can't believe this is original.
Instead of welding the bracket I decided to use JB Weld epoxy.

I also started looking at the air intake grill. My grill has only two spring clip reinforcing brackets the third one is missing.

I think there is no hope of buying one of these, so I am going to try to make one myself.
Here is the finished result. It not fancy but should do the job made with bits and pieces I had lying around.

Getting the engine started Part 5 - Fuel Pump reinstalled.

Well my new gasket came and I re-installed the fuel pump on the car and you guessed it the car would not start. However I am now sure the pump is working and there is fuel being pump to the carburetor  as the bowl are full of fuel. So now what? I have a couple thing which I can check  still but if all else fails. In think I may need to remove the carbs and get a rebuild kit. This car is proving more difficult than I fist thought.
To cheer me up and because I had some time while I recharged my battery I started working on the grill and the chrome surround. The car came with two grills. The first had been chromed by Anton but the chromers had then polished holes throw the grill.  The second was a replacement grill Anton had bought which had been painted black.
I chose ti fill the holes which two part epoxy and paint the filled holes with a Keylon chrome paint pen. If you look close at the grill you can tell the paint chrome not very good but the overall effect is acceptable so I will be using this grill.
I removed the grill chrome surround and found some of the mounting bracket are broken. Another little job which need doing.

Getting the engine to start Part 4 - The fuel pump story continues and we have some success

Before I removed the fuel pump I checked the spark plugs. They all needed a good clean with a wire brush and I also checked for spark just to be on the safe side. Above is a video sorry about the quality. As you can see we have spark.
I again tried injecting fuel into the fuel bowls of the carburetor and again  with no success so in desperation I injected some fuel into the carburetors themselves and viola the engine fire up for a bit.
So back to the fuel pump. I removed the fuel pump easy really juts two 13mm bolts on either side. The pump seemed to be working but a bit sluggish and weak. So I took it apart very simple the inside looked a bit dirty so I gave it a clean and reinstalled the rubber impregnated diaphragm. I tested it with some fuel and wow what a difference fuel squirting down the drive way. So I reconnected it to the inlet filter pipe and it could not suck the fuel through. So I connected it to the fuel line directly and the pump worked so there must be a blockage in the pipe to or from the first filter.
Well after this I realized what had happened the fuel pump had been hoses connected the wrong way from the beginning so instead of sucking it was blowing into the tank. I managed to hand crank some fuel into the engine and she fired up!
Now I just need to wait for the grasket and new fuel line I ordered to come.

Getting the engine to start Part 3 - The fuel pump story continues

The fuel pump still does not seem to be pumping anything even through, I tried to prime it last night by injecting fuel into it and I also tried squirting some fuel into the Carburetor fuel bowls no luck. To make sure the fuel line to the tank was not blocked  I  broke the line to the first filter.  I then added a short rubber pipe to the tube and sucked fuel through by mouth and got a mouth full of fuel.
So there is no blockage to the fuel pump. I also checked that the pre pump filter and post pump filter where not in the wrong way and clear. They have a arrow showing the direction of flow on the side.  So I guess the next thing is to remove the fuel pump diassemble and check that it functions correctly. Fistly by trying to hand crank some fuel thorugh it and the by taking it apart.

Getting the engine to start Part 2 - Still does not start

OK so even after correcting the spark plug connection the car does not start. So back to basic for  a car to start it needs.
  1. Spark
  2. Fuel
  3. Air.
  4. Timming
I think the spark is OK but I should check the distributor just in case. My best guess is fuel the car is fitted with a mechanical fuel pump which may need priming or there is a leak etc.
I checked for fuel at the carburetor not a drop . Also spoke with Anton to check if I had missed anything. We agreed next step is to prime the pump.
I also ordered a Carburetor balance tool as I am always optimistic.

Aussie answer to getting a engine to start
Farther's Day
Well I am now starting to understand the scale of renovating this car. Should have read this first I guess?
Volvo P1800-buying-tips

I am a little worried about what to do first. So here is a brief list.
1. Get the engine to start.
2. Get the brakes to work.
3. Drive the car and check for other problems.
4. Fix them
5. Sort out the exterior of the car.
6. Sort out the interior.

Of course as some jobs are quick and others not so I may have to do a mix of items at the same time. Now for item 1. I will be using the method detailed on this website

Wish me luck

Stressed Out
We we had a very interesting morning. I got the U haul dolly from our local hardware store and me my Nina, Stefan, and our dog Tess all went to pick up the Volvo. When we arrived Anton was waiting and had organized everything beautifully, what a nice guy. He helped up back up the trailer and load up. The trip home was just across town and we were asked at the lights what our cool car was by our first admirer. I hope he will be the first of many,
When we were home my problems started how to back the trailer into the garage? I am hopeless with trailer and backing up. So I asked our friend Sven for help and together got it of the dolly and pushed it into the driveway. Which is where it sit now, this is how it begins.

I am now working hard to finish installing a new hub bearing assembly on my 1997 Toyota corolla which is taking up precious garage space which I need for my Volvo P1800. The reason I am doing this last minute is because I took the Hub assembly to a local garage to press the bearing in. Unfortunately I took it to a complete bunch of idiots who give mechanics a bad name. Not only did they not put in all the oil seals they left the spring clip out and just handed it back to my wife saying I must have given them the wrong one as it did not fit. Well the reason was they had pressed the bearing past the location for the spring clip.
When I went to complain they tried to tell me I did not need the oil seal and some BS about the clip being wrong.
Eventually I managed to persuade the Neanderthal to just do what I asked and press out the bearing to check and what do you know I was right. This is why I try to do my own car repairs as you end up asking a half ape to fix your car. Sorry I had to vent any way if you are local stay away from Whitney's Auto Care center on S. State St. I looked up their reviews on Google. All bad!  So I guess I only have myself to blame. I added my own non glowing review. If you are going to use a Mechanic, do your research. There are good ones out there, but they are few and far between.
I apologize for maligning Neanderthals. I am sure they are more technically competent than history gives them credit for. The chap below looks like he would do a good job.

1966 Volvo P1800
Today I went to look at and ended up buying a P1800. The current Owner Anton Smith was a very nice guy and we quickly settled on a price of $4000. I think that's good for a classic car which is only three year younger than me (I am fifty this year). It a beautiful car and looks to be in good shape. Some problems but then I expected that, it currently does not run but I think we should be able to get it going.
